Magpupungko Rock Pools
Description
Magpupungko Rock Pools is the most talked-about natural attraction on Siargao, and it earns that reputation. During low tide, the receding ocean exposes a series of natural tidal pools carved into volcanic rock – some shallow enough for non-swimmers, others deep enough for proper swimming and cliff jumps. The water is clear, fish and small sea creatures are easy to spot, and snorkeling gear is available for rent on site.
Getting here requires paying an entrance fee (around 60 PHP per person) plus a separate parking fee, and guides are included with entry – useful since the rocks get dangerously slippery and some sections see strong wave surges. A cliff-side staircase path offers an easier route to the main pool than scrambling over rocks. Beachside restaurants line the area and serve solid food, with boodle fights available if you plan around lunch.
Crowds are the main variable. On weekends and midday, the pools get packed and the magic shrinks considerably. Arrive early or on a weekday to have a real experience rather than sharing a small pool with dozens of strangers.
Highlights
- Snorkeling reveals fish and sea creatures tucked into rock crevices throughout the pools
- Multiple beachside restaurants with good food make it easy to build a half-day trip around the visit
- Multiple fee checkpoints (entrance, parking, environmental fee) feel disorganized, and crowds midday reduce the experience significantly
